This is the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple of the 33rd Degree located in Washington, D.C. on 16th Street near the Dupont Circle area. This is a picture I took while visiting Washington. I also took a tour inside. There are tours available, but hours are limited so it is best to check ahead of time. Inside are several things that have to do with Albert Pike, including a library that Albert Pike himself started. This is also a good place to find out who else was a high ranking Mason. One person was J. Edgar Hoover. They have a whole room devoted to him.
The 33rd Degree is the highest degree for a Scottish Rite Mason and is only bestowed on a very few. This is where it is bestowed. Most others only get to the 32nd Degree. This is generally how it works: A man first joins the local Blue Lodge in his city and gets the first, second, and third degree. A few go on to join either the Scottish Rite or the York Rite to get higher degrees. Each degree has an esoteric theme, and the themes get more mysterious as they go higher (generally). The material for the longest time was considered secret; but in recent times, one can learn about it if they research far enough.
Unfortunately, women still cannot be members.
