Home STAR WARS: The Big Picture STAR WARS: Episode III Other

Something terrible must have happened between Episode II and III because at the beginning of Episode III, Anakin does not even resemble the person in Episode II. Anakin is forcefully separated from Palpatine, surrounded and controlled by the Jedi. Padme is just one more controller in Anakin's life. Anakin no longer expresses himself at all and has even gone as far as to lie to himself about his true feelings. Anakin, in my opinion, is already dead long before he takes the Sith oath before Palpatine. To see someone so honest and alive change so much goes beyond tragedy. It is clear the Jedi and Padme destroyed Anakin. Desperate to find his spirit and true feelings, Anakin desperately clings to Palpatine. Palpatine was Anakin's only hope. This is sad because Palpatine has too much "Spock" in him to really help Anakin sort out his feelings which were churning like an active volcano. Palpatine does his best, but Palpatine just cannot equal Qui-Gon. Palpatine's comfort is like Troutman's comfort to John Rambo in the movie "First Blood." You still like and appreciate Palpatine for being the only person there for Vader.

If it were my movie, I would have had Obi-Wan have that fateful light saber fight before the Jedi are killed; then have thundering music when Vader is resurrected in the suit. In the suit I would have Vader kill all the Jedi. You would see the adult Jedi get it, and Vader's awesome powers would be showed off. You would cheer as Vader gets revenge. Lucas denies us this. If this movie were made in India, Shiva would be shown to be very powerful so that all in the audience could not miss it.

Anakin was very Jedi one minute then leaning Sith the next because of so many years of Jedi brainwash. Anakin forced himself to believe that he and Obi-Wan were friends. When a religious order is all pervasive like the Jedi were, you always try to act like them. The Jedi were like a cult. Anakin's falling out with the Jedi is classic breaking free of cult influence. In a cult you do not know your own mind or feelings because they dictate your feelings to you.

The movie is portraying the Jedi manipulation of Anakin and his emotions by first Anakin arguing with Obi-Wan in defence of Palpatine but then is convinced to spy on Palpatine. Palpatine confesses he is a Sith, showing trust in Anakin; but Anakin rats on Palpatine. Then, when Anakin sees Palpatine in trouble, his conscience speaks to him; and Anakin defends Palpatine. In the last analysis, Anakin's loyalties and love lies with Palpatine.

From years of being a Jedi, Anakin's mind is controlled by the Jedi; so Anakin's desire for power is really his desire for freedom. Anakin longs for his spirit to be free of such suffocating control. Palpatine offers that freedom.

In Episode II, Anakin is young, fresh, and flows with all his feelings. Anakin is also honest and in touch with his feelings. In Episode III, Anakin stuffs his feelings and lies. Now Anakin is twisted and confused, but not by Palpatine but by the Jedi who oppress him. Padme adds to this oppression. Anakin feels like a man who aged tremendously. Anakin suddenly feels like a 40 year old in a 24 year old body. Anakin aged like some presidents do from being in that office. Anakin aged so shockingly fast. Unfortunately this is a story that could be easily renamed "Catch 22" if it weren't for the fact that that title has already been taken.

The hard transition from Anakin to Darth Vader is so emotionally and spiritually painful that even as the pre-helmeted Vader, Vader lashes out at Palpatine and sounds like Vader will ditch Palpatine and rule with Padme.

Anakin in Episode III is now absorbed by the Jedi. Anakin now stuffs his true feelings and has lost touch with them. Anakin convinces himself that he and Obi-Wan are friends, but his true feelings and self cry for Palpatine. By now the Jedi, especially Obi-Wan Kenobi, have total mind control of Anakin. Anakin's spirit is continually raped by Obi-Wan. This is why Anakin truly deeply hates Obi-Wan. This comes out strongly in the fateful light saber fight between Anakin and Obi-Wan. Anakin loses all capability for rational thought as he continually chases and lunges after Obi-Wan. When your spirit is continually bent and controlled by another, this creates a hatred of such uncontrolled rage that Anakin's temper was as hot as the lava around him. Obi-Wan is the biggest reason Anakin goes to the Dark Side because Anakin feels like a cat in a corner, desperate to free himself from the horrible grip of Obi-Wan; so when Palpatine offers the power of the Dark Side, Anakin smells freedom. And as the helmeted Vader, he gets it because Vader is the most powerful person in the galaxy next to Palpatine. Instead of bowing and scraping to many Jedi above him, Anakin as Vader only bows to Palpatine. This is the correct person to bow to since Palpatine represents (God) the Force in its judgment form. Palatine even implies this in the discussion at the opera scene.
