Home STAR WARS: The Big Picture STAR WARS: Episode III Other

In Episode III, Anakin's relationship to Palpatine is not as tight as in Episode II. It is obvious that between Episode II and Episode III, the Jedi must have made it hard for Palpatine and Anakin to see each other. The Jedi, like a cult, tried to separate people from families, friends, and especially friends that encourage and strengthen you, meaning Palpatine. By Episode III, Anakin is unstable, crushed and destroyed before he decides to become a Sith.

Palpatine, for the first time in the series, uses the Sith mind trick on Anakin. Anakin just disarmed Mace and then went into shock; so, Palpatine took over. Suddenly for the first time in Star Wars, the "Dune" voice was used (from the movie "Dune"). Since Anakin was already manipulated and controlled like a puppet, the only way to free Anakin was to override the Jedi manipulation with Palpatine's more powerful maipulation.

This same tactic was used in the 1960's original Star Trek (television series) by Captain Kirk. In the Episode called "Plato's Stepchildren," Captain Kirk uses mind power to control this midget who was always controlled by this other person. The other controller gave up because Kirk was better at it. So, Kirk, and now the midget, were able to get back to the safety of the Enterprise. Once Kirk had won the freedom of the midget, the midget's free will was restored to him. Palpatine did this for Vader.
