VOICE CLASS

SUMMER 2008

In 10 weeks learn the dos and don'ts of breath, relaxed posture, word formation, articulation, and voice production, all while learning classics of the jazz repertory.

NO ITALIAN SONGS OR OPERA, PROMISE!

Maximum 5 participants. Minimum 3.

Class meets on Saturday afternoons
at a time agreed upon by participants.

Classes meet on
6/14, 6/21, 6/28, 7/5, 7/12,
7/26, 8/2, 8/9, 8/16, 8/23.

No class 7/19 (Grassroots Festival Weekend).

The voice class is a set curriculum, as opposed to private lessons which are open to change from week-to-week. The class teaches some very basic theory, then puts it into practice. Whereas a usual private lesson is 50 minutes, the 90 minute class allows the various participants all to have some time to try the concepts, before we go to the piano to try some simple songs. Songs are chosen from my own collection, to match the particular vocal objective of the day.

BASIC CURRICULUM [Subject to Change to Meet Needs of Class]

1. Theories of technique, Anatomy and Physiology, and the evolution of voice.

2. Diaphragmatic [eupneic] breathing.

3. Don't Panic! Eliminating dyspneic breathing. (oh, such big words!)

4. Structure and function of breath [and other tidbits of good posture].

5. Building Muscles: Uh-huh!, Mm-hmm!, Straws, and Ooo!.

6. Use, Mis-Use, and Abuse of the Jaw.

7. Word Formation I . . [vowels and valving].

8. Word Formation II . . [consonants].

9. Pitch Changes.

10. Did somebody say Jazz?
